Weight Management using Herbs

Our weight. It’s something that we all think about at some stage in our lives. And for many of us, weight is something that we struggle to manage.

So, why is managing weight so hard?

We know we need to eat well and exercise. And lots of us do! However, if our bodies aren’t functioning optimally, managing weight can feel an impossible task. And a really frustrating one too. Especially if you are eating well and exercising but your desired weight still alludes you.

Often, a weight issue is the outcome of other things going on internally. Functions that aren’t obvious but are happening all the time. And if these functions aren’t working as well as they should they can cause all sorts of weight-related issues.

  • sluggish metabolism
  • unstable blood sugar levels
  • poor digestion and elimination

The Good News

There are some great natural herbs that can help improve the mentioned physiological functions. Herbs have a long history of clinical use and there are lots of scientific studies and research to back them up too.

Metabolism

Metabolism is an umbrella term which covers what your body does with the food that you eat. It is a complex process that governs whether your body stores energy (as fat or glycogen in the liver), or uses it up. Herbs can boost your metabolism to help your body utilise food properly.

Yerba Mate (Ilex paraguariensis) is clinically proven to boost metabolism and help break down fat (lipolytic). It’s naturally occurring caffeine, theobromine and theophylline stimulates metabolism which increases fat burning and energy levels.

Dandelion root (Taraxacum officinalis) and Apple Mint (Mentha spp.) help the liver and gallbladder break down and metabolise fat and toxins. They also promote healthy bowel movements – what goes in needs to come out nice and regularly!

Blood Sugar Levels

Blood sugar irregularities are really common and can be a major roadblock when trying to make healthier choices. Irregular blood sugar levels can cause cravings as well as peaks and troughs in energy levels.

If you are overweight and recognise this sort of pattern, then you should seek professional help to support you. Over time, poor blood sugar control can lead to insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes.

Key herbs can work via several different mechanisms to improve blood glucose levels:

Yerba Mate promotes healthy levels of glucose, cholesterol and serum triglycerides (a type of fat found in your blood that your body uses for energy).

Olive Leaf (Olea europaea) is well researched to regulate blood sugar levels, cholesterol and blood pressure.

Cinnamon (Cinnamomum zeylancium) helps balance blood sugar levels, reduce sweet cravings and evenly distribute energy throughout the day.

Digestion and detoxification

Good digestion is vital for weight loss as poorly digested foods can lead to nutrient deficiencies and cravings, as well as bloating. Equally important is the proper detoxification of toxins. If the liver, bowels and kidneys are not working optimally, the body will not break down fat cells and store them instead.

Apple Mint helps with the proper digestion of food, which limits overeating. It eases irritation in the stomach and bowel.

Dandelion root is proven to inhibit the production of fat cells. It enhances digestion and liver detoxification to expel toxins efficiently. It contains prebiotic fibre that improves the feeling of fullness after a meal.

Cinnamon supports healthy digestion and reduces bloating, indigestion and inflammation.

Nettle (Urtica dioica) helps ease water retention and cleanse the body of toxins and wastes.

Good support can make all the difference

Most people are able to lose their extra kgs with mindful lifestyle choices (diet and activity). By using of herbs, these choices can be enhanced greatly.

If you’re trying to lose a significant amount of weight then it’s a really good idea to seek advice from a natural health practitioner. Having that expert support can make all the difference.

It won’t happen overnight…

A healthy, long-term approach to weight management is a great goal to have. And an achievable one! While the journey is hard (there is no denying this) the benefits far outweigh the effort involved. Think about the future you and how good it will feel to feel great!

The best advice: instead of worrying about your weight, focus on your health.
