Campylobacter Outbreak – Havelock North

Campylobacter is the most common bacterial cause of food borne illness in New Zealand. It occurs usually in single, sporadic cases, however as you will be aware we currently have an outbreak in Havelock North due to contamination of the local water supply. We have put together some information and treatment suggestions for those who are effected or who wish to prevent contracting Campylobacter. The following information is courtesy of The HealthEd website:

Symptoms

  • Symptoms will usually appear 2 to 5 days after exposure and improve after 2 to 3 days.
  • The main symptoms are: watery diarrhoea (sometimes bloody), abdominal pain or cramping, fever, nausea and vomiting.
  • Some people may not experience any symptoms. Others get a flu like illness first, such as headache, muscle pains, fever and fatigue.
  • About 90% of affected people recover from the illness within one week.
  • In rarer cases, complications can occur including dehydration, relapses over weeks, irritable bowel syndrome, arthritis or acute paralysis (Gullian Barre syndrome).

How to avoid getting campylobacter and passing it on to others

  • Boil water to a roiling boil for 1 minute before consuming or using for dishes, food preparation or dental hygiene.
  • Wash your hands thoroughly by using plenty of soap, cleaning under fingernails, rinsing hands well and drying on a clean towel:
    • before and after preparing food
    • after going to the toilet or changing a baby’s nappy
    • after caring for people with campylobacter
    • after playing or working with animals.

Taking time off work or school

Usually people can go back to work and children can return to early childhood centres and school if they have been free of symptoms for 48 hours.

However, as campylobacter infection is a notifiable disease it is important that you check with your Healthcare practitioner or Public Health Service first.
